We’ve got a few miscellaneous road bikes on sale. If you’ve been holding out for the perfect deal, this is your chance to capitalize.

First, the beautiful Opus Allegro, featuring a full carbon monocoque frame, Mavic Aksium Race wheels, and a Shimano Ultegra derailleur on a 105 drivetrain. Regularly priced at $2800, it is on sale for $2450.

Or, you might like the Alto, an aluminum frame with carbon fork, seatstays, and chainstays. It also rolls on Mavic Aksium Race wheels, but features a SRAM Rival drivetrain, all for only $1950. That’s $290 off the regular price.

Finally, we’ve discounted the Andante. This bike features an aluminum frame with carbon fork and seatstays, the same Aksium Race wheels, and a Shimano Ultegra-105 drivetrain. The regular price is $1920; we’re selling our last few for $1600.

This is the time of year for sweet deals; grab one while their still around. There will likely be more sweet deals to come in the near future – not just on bikes, but also summer clothing, shoes, etc. You’ll have to forgive us for our apparent hap-hazardness; we’re still new and figuring stuff out. One thing is for sure, though: any clearance sales will be posted on this blog, so keep checking up on us. You’ll be thankful you did.

Several weeks ago, amidst our busy summer season, two customers asked us to build up two different types of bikes. Our eyes lit up like it was Christmas in July and we gladly accepted the challenge! We’ve wanted to custom-build bikes for ourselves but building up a bike for someone else is a close second.
First, a customer, wanting to stand out in a crowd, chose to build up a Traitor Exile frameset. After a jaunt down to Ferndale, WA, to the Traitor Cycles warehouse, we built up this beautiful Curry Dragon road frame with carbon bars, Easton EA70 wheels, and a 1×10 SRAM Rival drivetrain.

Then another customer asked us to help restore a stunningly well-kept red, 1961 Raleigh that he had picked up recently. Since we both own old Raleighs, we knew this task was just up our alley. We cleaned the frame and added some new parts, like a vintage-looking north-road handlebar with cork grips and cream-coloured tires. We think the finished product looks pretty sharp; a show-piece, for sure!

You can see a couple more photos on our Flickr site.

On a completely different note, last week we met with our Felt sales reps and they gave us a sneak peek into the Felt 2011 line-up. We’re pretty excited about the 2011 road series and the commuter bikes. We’ll give you an update when we get the official catalogue and when we see the bikes at Interbike.

The Red-and-White Classic Sale

Canada Day is pretty special, and Fort Langley loves their heritage festivities. In the spirit of the day, we’re offering 10% off all red-and-white products; that includes tires, lights, bells, helmets, jerseys, shoes, and – yes – even some bicycles. You could save hundreds of dollars; come visit the shop to learn the details and scope out your savings.

Family-friendly Bike Ride

We’re planning a leisurely bike ride through the countryside. The route has yet to be determined, but we figure a nice ride out to Derby Reach and back sounds quite lovely. It’s approximately 20 km (round trip), which should take nearly 2 hours, allowing for a relaxing break at the park. We’ll gather at the shop at 11:00, and roll on from there. After the ride you can head over to the Fort for the Canada Day BBQ.

If you need a bike, you can always rent one of our wonderful Classicos. We also have rides for your kids, whether they want to pedal their way along, or simply hop in a trailer for a comfortable cruise. We’d love to see you there.

So, here’s the reason I haven’t posted a blog since May 19: my wife and I had a baby. His name is Nathan, and he’s pretty awesome. We insisted that his first outfit should be this little, green bicycle number, even though it’s big enough for two of him.

Things are pretty busy as it is this time of year, but now we have the added task of indoctrinating an infant in the cycling world. It’s tough, you see, because he doesn’t communicate very well yet. That being said, we have gotten him on a bike once already, and he’s quite good as sitting/sleeping in a Burley.

Next month, we’ll be training him for bike maintenance.

So, Monday May 24th is Victoria Day – May Day in Fort Langley, and the whole town will be a-buzz. Kicking off the celebrations will be the 88th running of the Fort Langley May Day Parade at 11:00. Of course, there will be festivities in town all day long, held at the Fort Langley Community Park. The weather should be fantastic, as always – a perfect day to hang out in Fort Langley.

We’ll be contributing to the festivities at Fort Langley Cyclery. The Bionx Demo-mobile will be here, with a fleet of electric-assist bikes for you to try out. That’s always a good time. Also, the Langley Area Cycling Coalition will have a booth set up, so if you’re interested in cycling advocacy, come have a chat with them. They’ve got the inside scoop on cycling infrastructure and safety education in Langley.

Also, as you may have heard by now, our rental bikes are ready to roll. There’s no better way to spend a day in Fort Langley than riding around town or on the Fort-to-Fort trail. Stop by the shop, pick up a bike, and we’ll tell you how to get to the best riding in the Lower Mainland.

After months of haggling and negotiation, Fort Langley Cyclery has landed another big proverbial fish – Felt Bicycles.

Jim Felt and his colleagues have been building top-tier racing bikes for a while now, and enjoy a reputation of having built some of the fastest bikes in the world, like the Felt TK1 track bicycle (best wind tunnel results ever) and the Felt DA triathlon bike (winner of many prestigious triathlons and time trials). They have also established a strong sponsorship with the Garmin-Transitions ProTour cycling team, including local Langley boys Svein Tuft and Christian Meier.
So, if you’re interested in a new road bike, maybe you should consider something like this one:

The F5 is a beautiful high-modulus carbon road bike with an aggressive racing geometry. With an ever-reliable Shimano 105 drivetrain and Mavic wheels, you can get yourself performance driven carbon-fibre bicycle for only $2500.

We’ve placed our first order, so hopefully we’ll see a few bikes in the shop by next weekend.

In other news, four guys are planning to ride one quad-tandem bicycle across Canada as a fundraising tour for their four favourite causes. The journey starts right here, at Fort Langley Cyclery, on Thursday morning, May 6, at 10:00. If you can’t make it there to see them off, you should most certainly swing by the Fort Pub the night before to pass on your best wishes and make a donation to the cause(s). You can find more information on their website: www.thetandemtour.com.

It’s that time of year when you might consider pulling your rickety, old bike out of the garage, maybe get it tuned up, and try to motivate yourself to get on it and go for a ride, despite knowing that you’ll never be comfortable on a bike that’s three sizes too small for you anyway. Maybe your thinking, ‘That old clunker isn’t even worth the cost of a tune-up anymore.’ It’s probably true, but that doesn’t make it worthless.

FreeRide is a non-profit organization based in Langley that takes old bicycles in by donation and refurbishes them for people in need. This group of volunteers are driven by two very motivating goals: to reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills; and to provide bicycles to those in need.

The FreeRide program consists of three parts:
1. Fix & Sell – donated bikes are repaired and sold. All profits go back into FreeRide to buy parts and supplies for other bikes.
2. Fix & Donate – donated bikes are repaired and given to those who need a bike but can’t afford to pay for one.
3. Strip & Recycle – donated bikes that are beyond repair are stripped of parts which are used again or sold for scrap metal. All profits go back into FreeRide to buy parts and supplies.

All work is done by volunteers, and 100% of profits go back into the FreeRide organization. The refurbished bikes are distributed as necessary in partnership with other charitable organizations such as Home Church and Christian Life Assembly.

Donations are always welcome, and very much appreciated, regardless of how old and clunky you think your bike is. At least it doesn’t end up in a landfill.

Fort Langley Cyclery accepts donations on behalf of FreeRide, but if you live in Abbotsford or Aldergrove, you might find it more convenient to drop them off at Cranky’s Bike Shop. Either way, they end up at the same place.

We here at Fort Langley Cyclery would like to take this moment to congratulate Stan Swindon, winner of the Opus Classico draw that was held last week in celebration of our Grand Opening. We look forward to seeing him (or perhaps his wife…?) cruising around Fort Langley on his (or her) new city bicycle.

The Grand Opening was a huge success. We’d like to thank everybody who helped out as employees-for-the-day. Thanks also to the guys who ran the bike demos in the parking lot, and to the VACC for setting up a tent and spreading their cycling advocacy message. The weather was perfect, the crowds were great, and we had a wonderful time.

So, thank you, everyone.
